Verse 17 continues the father’s explanation of why the son should not follow the path of sinners. Here, the father employs an illustration to make his point, with the illustration being presented in verse 17 and its application following in verse 18.
The illustration is of a bird and a net. Birds, like other animals, were commonly caught using nets. However, a trap must employ some element of surprise to be effective. Even a bird, despite its limited understanding, will not knowingly fly into a net that has been spread before its eyes. The bird recognizes the danger and avoids it.
The irony is that the sinners described in the preceding verses lack even this basic level of discernment. In verses 13–14, the sinners are motivated by greed and the promise of material gain. They are so focused on obtaining wealth that they fail to recognize the danger of the path they have chosen.
