Proverbs 1:24

Because I called and you refused,

I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;

Verse 24 marks a shift in Wisdom’s speech. In verses 20–23, Wisdom publicly called out and offered her instruction to anyone willing to listen. Now we learn how the people responded: they refused. “I called and you refused” indicates that Wisdom was not simply unheard; she was actively rejected. Their lack of wisdom was not caused by a lack of opportunity. Likewise, “I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention” gives the picture of Wisdom reaching toward them, yet being ignored. She has called, reached out, corrected, and offered to teach, but they have chosen not to respond.

This connects with the repeated emphasis on hearing seen in the pervious verses. Verse 5 says that the wise will hear, verse 8 commands the child to hear his father’s instruction, and verses 20–21 picture Wisdom raising her voice publicly with the intent to be heard by the crowds. Here we see the opposite response: Wisdom calls, but the foolish refuse to hear. This also lays the foundation for the judgment that follows. Before consequences come warning and correction. Wisdom has made herself available; their coming destruction is not because Wisdom was hidden from them, but because they rejected her when she called.
