Proverbs 1:31

“So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way

And be satiated with their own devices.”

Verse 31 brings us to the consequences of the rejection described in the preceding verses. The people have repeatedly refused Wisdom’s instruction, rejected her correction, and chosen to follow their own desires. Now they must experience the results of those decisions.

The second half verse 31 develops this imagery of sowing and reaping further. The people will be satiated with their own devices. The word satiated suggests being filled completely, even to the point of excess. Earlier, the people rejected Wisdom’s counsel because they preferred their own plans and desires. Now those same plans will become the source of their suffering. They pursued their own desires believing that doing so would bring satisfaction, and now they will receive those desires in full, along with their consequences. Throughout the chapter, the author has demonstrated that the path a person chooses determines the destination toward which they are traveling. Those who continually reject Wisdom will eventually find themselves consuming the bitter fruit of their own decisions and on a path that leads to destruction.
